SAP stands for Substance Abuse Professional. Individuals who have violated a Department of Transportation (DOT) drug / alcohol regulation are required to have a clinical assessment by a SAP. The SAP will do the substance use / abuse
assessment and will then make corresponding treatment recommendations to resolve the problems related to the employees drug / alcohol use. Once the assessment is completed, the SAP will make recommendations about:
⦁ Treatment needed
⦁ Follow up testing
⦁ Education
⦁ Other issues pertaining to the employee returning to a safety sensitive position

It’s understandable to be frustrated and overwhelmed. We will help you navigate this process so that you feel comfortable and know what is recommended for you to complete the SAP process so you will be able to return to work. You can come to us with no judgement and with understanding. We are here to help.

All DOT regulated employees, are required to have pre-employment testing, random drug and alcohol tests, post-accident drug testing, RTD testing and/or follow-up testing.

If you’re a DOT regulated employee:
⦁ Bus drivers
⦁ Truck Drivers
⦁ Students in Truck Driving School
⦁ Mechanics
⦁ Pipeline Workers
⦁ Pilots
⦁ Flight attendant
⦁ Commercial drivers (CDL)
⦁ Coast Guard and more….
and you have failed a DOT drug or alcohol test or you have refused to take a DOT drug or alcohol test – you will or have been told to complete the SAP process before your employer can return you to your safety sensitive position.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Clearinghouse (FMSCA) provides FMSCA and employers information to help identify drivers who are not permitted to drive or operate a commercial vehicle due to a DOT drug and alcohol violation. This includes violations committed with current and former employers. So even if an employee did not report their violation to a new employer, that employer is able to see their violation in the FMSCA Clearinghouse. Records of drug and alcohol violations remain in the Clearinghouse for 5 years or until a driver has completed the RTD process, whichever comes first.

Virtual Appointments are available
Sometimes, getting to come to us in person is not possible. For such cases, we offer virtual / ZOOM appointments.

Our goal is to help you get what you need to be able to get back to work.

Step by Step SAP Process:
⦁ Employee is referred to SAP from DER (Designated Employee Representative) to complete the RTD (Return to Duty) process
⦁ DER provides employee with names of SAP’s in the area
⦁ Employee calls to schedule and pre-pay for the SAP Evaluation
⦁ Employee gathers needed information for the SAP Evaluation
Needed information:
⦁ Name and contact information of your DER and MRO (Medical Review Officer)
⦁ Written copy of your DOT violation
⦁ Photo ID
⦁ Copy of your drug / alcohol test
⦁ Employee has SAP Evaluation (about 90 minutes) – SAP Evaluator will ask about work and family history, substance use and abuse, mental health, employees accountability for caused the violation, the use of other assessment tools. Your SAP evaluation will not be able to be completed
IF you do not bring the “needed information” to your evaluation.
⦁ SAP Evaluator will then compile the assessments with the personal interview to tailor a plan for you to be able to complete the RTD process and get back to work. This may be education, treatment, counseling, etc…
⦁ SAP Evaluator will create a treatment plan that is specifically for you
⦁ You / employee complete the items identified in your treatment plan
⦁ Once you / employee completes all items on the treatment plan, you will return to the SAP Evaluator for a final evaluation. It is at this time that it will be determined if you have successfully completed your treatment plan.
⦁ It will then be determined if you are ready to return to work.
⦁ SAP will send a letter to you DER stating you have or have not completed the SAP recommendations on your treatment plan.
